A major agricultural economist has spoken at a live export conference in Darwin and doused some of the hype in Australia around the booming demand for meat worldwide.
Dr Peter Barnard told the delegation that China and Asia in particular were not going to have the massive demands pre-empted by the industry.
He mentioned demand for food was, in fact, going to decrease, as globe GDP development was unlikely to reach the levels it had more than the past 25 years.
“In major population nations like China it’s going to go backwards, population will drop from 2030 onwards and that’s why their now reconsidering their 1 youngster policy,” Dr Barnard said.
He said compared to a 62 per cent enhance in demand from the 1950s to 1975, that growth in the past 25 years had only been 41 per cent.
Dr Barnard said India was 1 nation that was an exception, but as a low customer of meat it would not drive demand.
Australia’s productivity improvements were also at a far greater price than what would be essential, and developing nations were rapidly improving their productivity.
The chief executive officer of the Australian Livestock Exporters Council, Alison Penfold, stated her investigation had shown that demand for processed meat was certainly reducing, especially as establishing nations located their personal methods to feed themselves.
She said she had not noticed the statistics quoted by Dr Barnard, but was confident there would still be a sturdy place for reside cattle exports in the future.
