85yo found dead in nursing property bed ‘with head stuck’

An 85-year-old resident of a Hobart nursing residence was identified dead in her bed in 2012 with her head stuck amongst a mattress and a bed pole, a coronial inquest has heard.

The inquest was told Barbara Westcott was located by employees at Hobart’s Vaucluse Gardens about 11:30pm in March 2012.

Her head was trapped among a mattress and a removable pole utilised to aid residents get in and out of bed.

The inquest heard Ms Westcott had restricted mobility.

She also suffered from Parkinson’s and Addison’s illnesses, dementia and hypertension, and essential half-hourly checks.

Employees told police Ms Westcott was last checked about 8:30pm or 9:00pm that evening.

Patient charts examined by police indicated she had final been checked at two:30pm in the afternoon.

The inquest heard that warnings had been issued by distributors of bed poles about their use by people with limited mobility.
