Thousands of motorcyclists will make their annual Christmas toy run through Adelaide and the Hills this weekend, with the charity event now in its 37th year.

Key points:

  • Toy run is in its 37th year in SA
  • Up to 10,000 riders take part
  • Riders carry a toy to donate to St Vincent de Paul

“It’s hard to [imagine] all the toys that have been delivered over that time,” toy run coordinator Harold Lindemann told 891 ABC Adelaide.

He said as many as 10,000 bike riders were expected to take part, but it was impossible to come up with a firm total because some joined in along the route and others simply headed straight for Callington Oval to be part of the day’s activities there.

All riders bring a toy and the St Vincent de Paul charity collects them to distribute to children at Christmas.

“This is a day when everyone can see us and notice us,” Mr Lindemann said.

“The other side is the camaraderie the motorcyclists have in coming together for a single purpose — that is to try to bring some joy to people that are less fortunate than themselves on this special day of the year.”

Then they all start their engines up at once to get going. It’s really something.

He said many people enjoyed the spectacle of the bikes lining up at Victoria Park for their 11:00am start on Sunday.

“If you go down to Victoria Park racecourse and see them all lined up on the Clipsal [motor race] track it’s quite awe-inspiring,” he said.

Many people line the route to watch the motorcyclists pass.

“We try to keep the bikes bunched up, rather than letting them spread out over the route, so there is a bit of a spectacle,” Mr Lindemann said.

The riders head out of the city along Hutt Street and Glen Osmond Road, then up the South Eastern Freeway to Callington, where there are food stalls and leather gear sellers among the attractions at the oval.
