The deaths of two construction workers at a site in East Perth yesterday highlights the need to have for greater on-website safety scrutiny, the Master Builders Association (MBA) says.
The two males, understood to be from Northern Ireland, were killed when they were crushed by a concrete panel at the apartment improvement close to the corner of Bennett and Goderich Streets.
The internet site is run by Perth business Jaxon Construction.
MBA building director Kim Richardson stated safety standards had slipped, even though red tape had improved.
“All workers have the proper to go to work and have the expectation and the right to come property safely,” he mentioned.
“That did not occur.
“There’s been a move to have a tremendous amount of paperwork exactly where men and women will tick boxes to say they have a protected method in location.
“But that does not guarantee safe systems of work.
“The way the perform is performed is exactly where the focus demands to be.”
Mr Richardson said the security watchdog Worksafe needed to step up its presence at industrial building websites.
“Folks are just not listening to the security message,” he mentioned.
“When someone is driving down the freeway and they see a police automobile they automatically slow down and check they’re doing the appropriate factor.
“Worksafe hasn’t had the profile in the commercial sector to provide that influence and that presence to make sure that the message of safety is consistently there at the forefront of people’s minds,” he said.
It is understood the two guys killed in the accident had been unloading tilt-up concrete panels from a truck — function that calls for special training and qualifications.
An investigation into the incident will appear at what qualifications the males had as well as these of other workers involved in the method.
Jaxon Building has supplied counselling to all employees who had been on site yesterday.
All of the company’s sites will be closed these days.
