Chris Cairns located not guilty of perjury, perverting course of justice

Updated November 30, 2015 22:03:58

Former New Zealand cricket all-rounder Chris Cairns has been identified not guilty of perjury and perverting the course of justice.

The jury at the Southwark crown court returned a not-guilty verdict on Monday evening, ending a nine-week trial following a ten hour and 17 minute deliberation.

Cairns’ co-defendant and lawyer Andrew Fitch-Holland was also cleared of a perjury charge.

Cairns was accused of lying under oath in the course of a libel case, when he told the court in 2012 that he had “never” cheated at cricket and would not contemplate performing so.

That statement had been contradicted by other individuals, such as his former New Zealand group-mates Brendon McCullum and Lou Vincent.

In 2012, Cairns effectively sued Indian businessman Lalit Modi, then chairman of the Indian Premier League, more than a tweet that said Cairns had been involved in match fixing.

McCullum had detailed how he rebuffed approaches by Cairns to be involved in a “organization proposition”.

Cairns told the court he may have employed that phrase, but would have been referring to endorsements and sponsorship opportunities.

He played in 62 Tests for the Black Caps and 215 one-day internationals among 1989 and 2006.

A lot more to come.

Cate Campbell breaks 100m freestyle world record at Short Course Championships

Posted November 28, 2015 19:33:00

Cate Campbell has set a one hundred metres freestyle planet record during the 200m final at the Australian Brief Course Championships in Sydney.

Coach Simon Cusack challenged his star pupil to break the 51.38 mark set by Libby Trickett in 2009 following Saturday morning’s 200m heats.

And the 23-year-old responded in perfect fashion, re-writing the record books with a beautiful 50.91-second swim more than the initial 100m before cruising the rest of the way to record an official time of two:18.26.

Far more to come.
