Principal’s name removed from school developing more than sexual abuse

The name of former Brisbane Grammar School principal Max Howell has been removed from the BGS sports centre as an apology to former students who have been sexually abused.

Dr Howell led the school from 1964 to 1989, throughout which time college counsellor Kevin Lynch molested scores of boys.

The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse heard in November that parents had gone to Dr Howell for support and the former principal had even walked into Lynch’s office throughout the abuse.

Dr Howell, who died in 2011, denied realizing about the abuse.

Numerous of Lynch’s victims approached the college to say emblazoning the indoor sports centre with Dr Howells name triggered them offence.

The school’s board of trustees discussed this situation with the Howell family, and they supported the decision to take it down.

The family mentioned in a statement it hoped the selection would support the healing approach for these abused by Lynch.

“He would have acknowledged the fact that the appalling abuse committed by Kevin Lynch occurred for the duration of his tenure as headmaster and would have apologised to the victims,” the household stated in a statement.

“He would have accepted that as the headmaster he was in the end accountable for the disgraceful actions of one particular of his employees.”

Board chair Howard Stack stated removing Dr Howell’s name was suitable.

“From our discussions with victims, we think the removal of the name is basic to the school’s apology to them,” he mentioned.

The board said the college was continuing to engage with victims with a individual apology, counselling and compensation.

Hobart dance teacher’s sexual relationships with students ‘controlling’

A properly-identified Hobart dance teacher who maintained sexual relationships with teenage girls was in a position of power and his conduct was a breach of trust, a court has been told.

Adam Charles Jose, 40, pleaded guilty in the Hobart Supreme Court to two counts of keeping a sexual connection with a person under 17 years of age.

Each girls were dance students at Jose’s Hobart studio.

Justice Robert Pearce has heard the initial relationship was performed in between September 2000 and November 2003.

Principal crown counsel for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Linda Mason, told the court the two started having sexual intercourse when the complainant was in her early teens.

The court heard he would tell her not to get bigger and create like other girls, just before breaking the connection off when the complainant was older by saying he nonetheless loved her but no longer discovered her sexually desirable.

The second relationship was performed virtually ten years later.

The complainant was then taken out of the dance school and the household reported it to police.

The court heard when Jose was interviewed by police, he claimed there have been people with “agendas” who have been attempting to lead to trouble for him and his dance college.

Ms Mason said the relationships had a profound impact on both girls.

“The relationships … at occasions involved subterfuge on his portion and were controlling in nature,” she mentioned.

“His conduct was a breach of trust.”

Jose faces ‘very uncertain future’

Defence lawyer Steven Chopping asked Justice Pearce to take Jose’s early guilty plea into account, saying it spared the complainants any anxiousness about becoming believed.

He also mentioned the initial partnership was conducted at the complainant’s home in the presence of her family.

The court heard the complainant’s mother had been friendly and accepting.

Mr Chopping said dance was Jose’s life, and he was now left with a really uncertain future.

He asked Justice Pearce to take into account that sexual incidents with the second complainant have been conducted more than clothing.

Jose was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on Monday.
